I decided to finish off the first part of 2026 will a challenge based on Colin O’Brady book, The 12 Hour Walk (Books)

Yesterday, I completed the 12-Hour Walk.

It wasn’t just about walking—it was about slowing down, paying attention, and learning.

One thing that really stood out was how different I felt depending on where I was walking. The first five hours were through the forest, and I found myself much more present—listening to the birds, noticing the trees, and simply being in the moment.

Later, as I moved into more urban areas, I could feel how much easier it was for my attention to be pulled in different directions. So after 12hours and 26minutes, 62.28km and 75,996 steps

Here are the biggest insights I took away:

  1. Inspiration starts the journey.
A single idea, conversation, or moment can spark something meaningful. But inspiration alone isn’t enough.
  • Have a plan.
You don’t need every detail figured out. You just need a direction. A simple plan gives your energy somewhere to go.
  • Take action.
Nothing changes until you move. The first step is usually the hardest, but every step after that becomes a little easier.
  • Life is one step forward, repeated.
Even when it’s hard. Even when you’re tired. Progress isn’t about giant leaps—it’s about continuing to take the next step.

5. Stay focused.
There will always be distractions and reasons to drift left or right. You don’t have to change your destination every time something pulls at your attention. Keep moving toward what matters.

The walk reminded me that success isn’t usually about doing something extraordinary. It’s about being present, getting inspired, making a plan, taking action, and then continuing to put one foot in front of the other.

One step. One decision. One day at a time.

What’s one step you’re taking today?

Play is more than fun—it’s a tool that strengthens collaboration, creativity, and communication in teams. Structured play-based exercises encourage employees to step outside their usual routines, solve problems collectively, and build trust. Here are five exercises that work in real-world corporate settings.

1. Problem-Solving Challenge
Divide the team into small groups and present a real or simulated problem that requires a solution within a limited time. Encourage creative thinking, collaboration, and discussion. Teams learn to communicate effectively, make decisions together, and leverage each other’s strengths.

2. Collaborative Storytelling
Each team member contributes a sentence or element to a story, building a narrative as a group. This activity develops creativity, listening skills, and the ability to adapt to unexpected ideas. It’s a fun way to highlight teamwork and idea-sharing.

3. Role Reversal Exercise
Employees temporarily take on another colleague’s role and tackle a work challenge from their perspective. This fosters empathy, understanding, and appreciation for different responsibilities while encouraging problem-solving in new ways.

4. Creative Building Challenge
Give teams a set of materials (blocks, string, paper, etc.) and a goal, such as building a bridge or a structure that can hold a certain weight. Teams practice collaboration, innovation, and planning while having fun in a low-stakes environment.

5. Quick Icebreaker Games
Short, energizing activities like “Two Truths and a Lie” or “Human Knot” are great for breaking tension and encouraging team members to connect in new ways. These can be used to start meetings, workshops, or longer team-building sessions.

Each exercise incorporates three essential elements: purpose, passion, and play. Teams understand the goal, bring energy to participation, and experience learning in a playful format. The benefits go beyond the activity itself—employees return to work with stronger communication skills, increased creativity, and higher morale.

Play is often associated with children, but research confirms that it’s equally powerful in the workplace. Play stimulates the brain, enhances creativity, reduces stress, and strengthens collaboration among team members. In essence, fun isn’t just a bonus—it’s a productivity tool.

Studies in organizational psychology reveal that playful activities activate the brain’s reward centers, releasing dopamine, which improves focus and problem-solving. Teams that engage in structured play are better at thinking outside the box and generating innovative solutions. Play also reduces stress by providing a mental break from the daily grind, allowing participants to return to work with renewed energy and clarity.

Inspired by Play leverages these principles to design team-building experiences that are both enjoyable and effective. From collaborative problem-solving challenges to creative storytelling exercises, every activity is crafted to spark engagement and creativity. One client reported that after a single playful workshop, cross-departmental teams were collaborating more freely and proposing new ideas without hesitation.

Play isn’t only beneficial for creativity; it strengthens interpersonal bonds. Games and challenges break down barriers, encourage communication, and build trust. A team that plays together learns how to navigate conflict, celebrate small wins, and support one another—skills that translate directly into improved workplace performance.

Implementing play is easier than it sounds. Start small with short exercises in meetings, collaborative problem-solving games, or even creative team competitions. By consistently integrating playful elements, teams experience lasting improvements in engagement, morale, and innovation.

Passion is the invisible force that drives high-performing teams. When employees feel connected to their work, motivated by a common purpose, and inspired to contribute their best, engagement and results soar.

At Inspired by Play, we believe that passion can be cultivated, not just expected. Leaders play a critical role in modeling enthusiasm and commitment. When leaders approach team-building activities with energy and authenticity, their behavior sets the tone for the entire team. Employees mirror that energy, creating a cycle of engagement and excitement.

One client reported that after participating in a purpose-driven, passion-fueled team workshop, employees were more willing to take initiative, share ideas, and collaborate across departments. The structured activities combined with playful challenges sparked both energy and creativity, reinforcing the team’s shared goals.

Passion also emerges when people feel their contributions matter. By designing experiences that connect individuals to larger objectives, teams experience personal satisfaction alongside collective success. Icebreakers, role-playing, and collaborative games can ignite curiosity and motivation, helping employees rediscover the joy in their work.

Furthermore, fostering passion reduces burnout. Engaged employees are more resilient, collaborative, and innovative. Integrating purposeful, playful, and passion-driven activities into workplace culture helps maintain high energy levels, even during high-pressure periods.

Why Purpose Should Be the Heart of Every Team-Building Event

Purpose is the foundation of any successful team-building initiative. Without it, events risk being entertaining but ultimately forgettable. Purpose aligns your team, clarifies objectives, and ensures that every activity contributes to meaningful outcomes.

At Inspired by Play, we design events where purpose is front and center. When teams understand the “why” behind what they’re doing, engagement soars. Participants show up not just to have fun, but to connect with their colleagues, reinforce shared values, and experience personal growth.

Studies show that purpose-driven teams outperform others in engagement and productivity. When employees understand the intent behind activities, they are more motivated to collaborate, innovate, and commit to the outcomes. For example, a corporate client recently participated in a problem-solving event with a clear purpose: strengthening cross-departmental collaboration. The result? Teams reported a 30% improvement in communication and a renewed sense of alignment with company goals.

To ensure purpose is embedded in every activity, it’s important to start with three key questions: What do we want to achieve? How does this connect to our team’s goals? How will participants grow personally and professionally? Answering these allows facilitators to design meaningful, targeted activities rather than generic games.

In practice, purpose can take many forms. It could be fostering innovation, improving trust, or simply helping a team recharge while strengthening bonds. Whatever the goal, clarity ensures the event delivers lasting impact.

At Inspired by Play, we complement purpose with passion and play, creating experiences that are engaging, energizing, and transformational. Purpose gives direction, passion drives energy, and play ensures learning is fun and memorable.

Lessons a team learns from geese

Lessons from Geese was transcribed from a speech given by Angeles Arrien at the 1991 Organizational Development Network and was based on the work of Milton Olson.

Fact One: As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird following it. By flying in a V-formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if it flew alone. That’s a fact. Seventy-one percent greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they’re going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the trust of one another.

Fact Two: Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.

Lesson: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go and be willing to accept their help, as well as give ours to others.

Fact Three: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.

Lesson: it pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. With people as with geese, we are interdependent on each other’s skills and capabilities and unique alignments of gifts, talents, and resources.

Fact Four: The geese in a formation honk from behind to encourage those in front to keep up their speed.

Lesson: We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging and not something else. In groups where there is great encouragement against great odds, the production is much greater – the power of encouragement. At the center of encouragement is “courage,” and the root of courage is a Latin word that means “heart.” Maybe honking strengthens the heart.

Fact Five: When a goose gets sick, or wounded, or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is either able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Lesson: If we have as much sense as geese, we too will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

Thought it was a great story to share on the power of teamwork, leadership and relationships.  Know where you are headed. Communicate and always support with positive encouragement.
